If they "laminate" the books in a brick of epoxy, this is good news.

Society to start laminating paper backed publications
by Lady Zombie inat the wednesday night ministry school meeting, a letter from the society was read announcing that wtbts paperbacked publications will begin to be laminated.
according to the letter, this "will save approximately 2 million dollars per year," "lengthen the life of the publications," and "increase the attractiveness" of the publications.. so there's that.. .
also, will someone please explain to me why 85% of the congregation started smiling and nodding at this.. i sometimes think that headquarters could send the congregations boxes of turds and the jws would act like it was the best thing ever..

Thursday June 26th update: walked six miles in my neighborhood; tried a new route that maps.google.com says is 6.0 miles, round trip. This one goes not only North-South but also East-West several times, so I get up and downhill segments (ground slopes up west to east). Goal for this weekend is to continue the trend... haven't missed a day in over a week, and won't let the fact that the rest of the house is at the DC hold me back.

The growing irrelevance of the Watchtower message
by drew sagan inin many ways it appears as if the watchtower movement is slowing down.
a number of changes over the last few years certainly show that the watchtower is in a period of transition.
they have cut back on the number of magazines they print as well as lowered the cost of production by eliminating things like hard backed books.

I don't see this happening. The current GB members didn't invent this religion. They bought into this stuff just like the rest of us did. Therefore, I think we'll eventually see the WT undergo changes involving a complete reinvention of their eschatology. It would be easier for the GB to implement those kinds of changes because it doesn't have to involve any admission of error. They could explain it away in their mind by saying that Jehovah allowed them to be mistaken for decades so that people could come to worship him and now Jehovah has seen it fit to provide his people with a clearer understanding of the truth, etc.
Ding ding ding. I agree 100%. I think the GB would be smartest to disavow any particular "end is near" eschatology, and instead invoke an "end is coming... but we have NO IDEA WHEN OR HOW SOON". This provides the disconnect between a specific date or immediate reward. Their focus would turn, as motivation, to a lifetime of loyalty that leads to some FUTURE resurrection reward... an intangible item that is hard to "disprove", since you have to die and be resurrected to know it was true. As with hellfire, a powerful motivating force in some religions, the fear of what will happen in your afterlife can be a powerful carrot that leads for a lifetime.
This is a great thread.

The Watchtower refuses to see value in local congregations having any sort of autonomy, even when it comes down to simple things like social activities. The general attitude is "If it's not scheduled by HQ, it doesn't matter".
Ain't that the truth! At least when I was growing up, we and the other congregations would have picnics, potlucks, ball games, get together for cards and such weeknights... how many KH's do those things anymore? I'd venture to say that very few do.

seeker4 : They give a talk two weeks after a DFing announcement to warn about the specific DFing offense?
I'm not sure if that's true.
Can anyone verify this?True for public reproof, not for DF. If you've been publicly reproved, one of the upcoming local needs parts will be about the subject matter in question... it is ostensibly a way for the congregation to be warned, to know what type of counsel was given, and to choose to 'mark' the individual (always a 'private choice') if they are aware of one(s) who are participating in the conduct mentioned.

You're right, Chris... just a little EVERY day is forward progress. Saw a shirt today that said "pain is weakness leaving your body". ;-)

Did not get 6, or even 5, miles today... got two miles then this caught me:
It was sunny when I left the house... about 20 minutes into my walk I heard some distant thunder. I looked south, behind me, and saw a cell building. No problem! Here, the cells ALWAYS move either north to south, or west to east, so if the cell is SOUTH of me, I'm clear... I looked to the north, no weather or building cells. Press on! I was chatting with a very dear friend who was telling me to be careful about the lightning... next thing I know, a bolt strikes the ground a few miles north of me, arcing from behind me, overhead, and hitting to the north. Sudden gust of violent wind (gust front), then the rain starts. My cell phone rings... my wife wants to know if I want to be picked up. I turn around and see a dark wall of rain 300 yards south and capitulate. (in the image above, the purple part south of the words "Keller" are what ran over me).
So, I got two miles walking in, and came back to the house, left the garage door open to enjoy the wind and rain, and worked out with the weights for an hour... over 100 crunches, three sets of 30 each on presses and flys at 40 pounds per arm, 65 pounds of leg lifts 3x30, and some calisthenic stretches and arches.
I ate healthy today too--mostly. I admit to a small piece of Turtle (caramel/chocolate/pecan) cheesecake a lady at work baked and brought in--that was SO good. :-) I'll walk an extra hour soon to make up for it.

If you don't hear about "the Kingdom" you won't be destroyed so why preach?
by Witness 007 inwitnesses believe in these last days, if you never spoke to a witness or heard about the kingdom, jehovah will not destroy you...you will have a second chance in the new system to study.
so why bother preaching at all....there will be time in "paradise.
" is this correct?

Thomas, that's an amazing quote of twisted logic from the 1952 WT. I thought Christians were supposed to be self-sacrificing... yet they say that 999 would be saved and ONE witness would die if the preaching work wasn't done, where as 1 would be saved and 1 witness would survive if the preaching work IS done. Wouldn't it seem, then, that the loving thing to do is to not preach, sacrifice yourself, and let 999 others live? LOL, "Folly" indeed.
Then, this gem:
Even those who oppose the view that all Armageddon’s slain are forever deadwill admit that those hearing but not accepting the witness now will perish eternally at Armageddon.
Am I misreading that quote? They said, in the first half, that those that think people who die at Armageddon will NOT die forever (those that oppose the view that those folks will be "forever dead") will admit that those who die at Armageddon will die forever. ??! Huh???
